The grid crops to 3:4

Since 2025 the profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 tile. A 3:4 post fills it exactly. A 4:5 post is a little wider than that, so the grid trims a sliver from each side, about 34 pixels; a square post loses 135 pixels a side. Opened, every post shows whole.

Drawn bigger, shown at 1080

Instagram shows photos 1080 pixels wide and shrinks anything bigger. Turning on Double Resolution exports 2160 wide, which Instagram shrinks for you; it's no sharper on a phone, but it's a good copy to keep.

Setting it up in Rindraw

New Drawing › Custom Canvas, in pixels: 1080 × 1350, or 1080 × 1440 for 3:4. Save both as presets.

Export as JPEG or PNG; for a carousel, put each slide in a frame and Export All › Images, one per frame.

Questions

What size is an Instagram post?

1080 pixels wide: 1080 × 1080 square, 1080 × 1350 portrait (4:5), or 1080 × 1440 (3:4).

Does Instagram crop 4:5 posts on the grid?

Slightly. The grid shows posts at 3:4, which is narrower than 4:5, so about 34 pixels go from each side. The post itself shows whole.
