Open an Illustrator file without Illustrator
Drop an .ai file here to see the artwork, hide layers, flip through its artboards, and save it as a PNG, in your browser on Windows, Mac, a Chromebook, iPad or Android. No Illustrator, no account.
Free. Your file is read by your browser and never uploaded.
What it shows
- The artwork, sharp, drawn from the PDF copy that Illustrator saves inside every
.aifile by default, at twice its size. - Layers, when the file was saved with them, as Illustrator names them. Untick one to hide it.
- Every artboard: pick one from the list when the file has several.
- PDF files too, with their layers and pages.
Saving gives a PNG at twice the artboard's size in points (144 dpi), on white or transparent. Saving a layer gives that layer alone, with transparency.
What it can't do
- Files saved without PDF Compatibility, and very old Illustrator files, can't be drawn. The viewer says so, and how to fix it in Illustrator.
- Editing: paths, text and effects stay as Illustrator drew them. Use Illustrator, Affinity Designer or Inkscape to change them.
- Layers show only when Illustrator saved them into the PDF copy; otherwise the artwork is one picture.
The viewer draws with pdf.js, Mozilla's PDF renderer, which loads when you open a file.
Draw on it
Rindraw, our drawing app for iPad, iPhone and Mac, imports PDF pages as pictures to paint over. This viewer also opens PSD, Krita and Procreate files.
Private by design
The viewer runs in the page. Your browser reads the file from your disk and draws it; nothing is sent to us or anyone else, and there's no account.
Questions
How do I open an .ai file without Illustrator?
Drop it into this viewer, in any current browser. It draws the artwork from the PDF copy Illustrator saves inside .ai files, lets you hide layers and switch artboards, and saves it as a PNG.
Is my Illustrator file uploaded?
No. It's read by your browser, on your device, and never sent anywhere.
Why does it say my .ai file can't be drawn?
Illustrator saves a PDF copy inside .ai files only when Create PDF Compatible File is on, which is the default. Files saved without it, and very old ones, have no copy a browser can draw. Open the file in Illustrator and save it again with that option on.
Can I edit the vectors or export SVG?
No: this viewer shows the artwork and saves it as a PNG at twice its size. To edit the paths, open it in Illustrator, Affinity Designer or Inkscape.
