Rindraw vs Krita
Compared in October 2026. Both apps change. If something here is out of date, tell us and we'll fix it.
Krita is a free, open-source painting app with a deep set of tools, made by a community of artists and developers. Choose Rindraw if you want to draw on an iPad or iPhone with Apple Pencil, where Krita doesn't run, and on a Mac with the same drawings. Choose Krita if you paint on a computer, especially Windows or Linux, and want a full studio for free.
The main difference
Krita is built for a computer with a pen tablet2. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and on Android tablets and Chromebooks, but not on iPad or iPhone1, 2. It's a raster painting app with separate vector layers2.
Rindraw is built for Apple Pencil first, and runs on iPad, iPhone and Mac. It keeps every stroke editable, on every layer and with any brush: when you recolor a line, bend it or export the drawing bigger, Rindraw paints the stroke again at the new size, so it stays sharp.

Where Krita is better
- Free and open source. It costs nothing, and you can study and change its code1.
- Every computer. Windows, macOS and Linux, and Android tablets and Chromebooks1, 2.
- Depth. Nine brush engines, filter and transform masks, G'MIC filters, Python scripting and full color management2. If you want to tune everything, Krita lets you.
- Years of use. Krita has been around since 20052, with many tutorials and brush bundles. Rindraw 1.0 came out in 2026.
Where Rindraw is different
- iPad and iPhone. Pressure, tilt and barrel roll on Apple Pencil, and Procreate's gestures, such as two-finger tap to undo. One purchase covers iPad, iPhone and Mac, with your drawings, brushes and palettes in iCloud Drive on each.
- Every stroke stays a stroke. Not only vector shapes: sketches, inks and painting, with their texture. Recolor them, warp them or export them poster-size.
- Less to set up. One brush engine and a small interface, so you start drawing rather than configuring.
- Built not to lose work. Every stroke is saved as you draw it, and your undo history is still there after you close the app.
- Nothing collected. No account, no analytics and no tracking. See the privacy policy.
Moving between them
Rindraw opens Krita's own .kra files, with their paint layers, names, opacity, blend modes, masks and groups. Rindraw saves layered PSD files too, which Krita opens2, so you can sketch on an iPad and finish in Krita on a computer. Step by step: moving from Krita.
Moving from another app? See how to bring your work over from Procreate, Clip Studio Paint, ibisPaint, MediBang Paint, Infinite Painter, Sketchbook, Adobe Fresco, Tayasui Sketches, ArtRage, Rebelle, Corel Painter, PaintTool SAI, or Photoshop.
